EU now registers almost quarter of global tanker fleet

Almost a quarter of the world's tanker fleet will carry the flag of a European Union nation after 10 new members were added on May 1, London-based shipbroker EA Gibson said.
Of the 10 new members, only Cyprus, Malta and Latvia have tankers bigger than 10,000 dwt in their registries, the broker said.

The three nations account for 24.8 mm dwt of capacity, or about 8 % of the world tanker fleet, the broker said. The previous EU members held 16 % of the world fleet of tankers carrying crude oil and refined products in their registries, the broker added.
From May 1, “future European decisions about tanker safety, operations and technical matters apply to a quarter of the world tanker fleet,” E.A. Gibson said. In addition, there are EU member-controlled vessels under other registries, the broker said.
