Florida approves natural gas pipeline projects

Apr 14, 2004 02:00 AM

Gov. Jeb Bush and the Florida Cabinet have approved two pipeline projects to bring natural gas from a port in the Bahamas to Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
The gas will be brought to Freeport, Grand Bahama, and to Ocean Cay near Bimini, by tankers and sent to Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale through the pipelines.

The pipelines would be built to Tractebel Caypso Pipeline and AES Ocean Express once they get final permits from the US Army Corps of Engineers.
The state had delayed its decision last month because of environmental concerns. There was no environmental testimony at the Cabinet meeting. The final arrangement calls for Tractebel and AES to pay up to $ 1.5 mm for any environmental damage they cause.
