Yamal Peninsula shows decreased gas production

Apr 30, 2004 02:00 AM

The production of gas on the Yamal Peninsula may be decreased by 2 to 3 times, Russian President Vladimir Putin declared at a meeting with the governor of the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Area.
According to Putin, an increase in gas production may be achieved on the basis of the information contained in a local database of geological and geophysical data. Putin deems it useful to create similar databases in other regions of the country.

The explored reserves of gas on the Yamal Peninsula amount to 34.2 tcm (22.2 % of the world's resources).
According to the governor of the Nenets-Nenets Autonomous Area, the peninsula will play the key role in Russia's energy strategy, according to which gas production in Russia should amount to at least 650 bn to 700 bn cm by 2020.
