Queen officially opens UK’s first gas-fuelled power station

Oct 29, 2004 02:00 AM

The Queen officially opened the first gas-fuelled power station to be built in the UK. The GE Energy Power Plant at Baglan Bay in south Wales boasts the world's most powerful and efficient turbine technology.
Dressed in a pink hat and coat, the Queen met plant staff and families before unveiling a Welsh plate plaque commemorating the visit. The Duke of Edinburgh, who was still sporting a black eye after slipping in the bath, was also present and wearing a hard hat during the visit.

The power station is home to GE's most advanced gas turbine with combined-cycle technology -- which is referred to as the H System. It produces 480 MW of electricity, enough to power 500,000 homes.
The system is the first gas turbine combined-cycle technology capable of achieving 60 % fuel efficiency, the company says.
