Russia and Kazakhstan continue gas talks

Oct 08, 2004 02:00 AM

Kazakhstan and Russia are continuing to hold talks on implementing a number of joint gas projects, Kazakh Prime Minister Daniyal Akhmetov said at a briefing after a meeting with Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Fradkov in Astana.
"We discussed the gas sector very carefully. In general would say that talks are going to plan for the implementation of these projects," Akhmetov said.

He said that think tanks in both countries "have carefully analysed the situation connected with the further development of the Karachaganak gas project."
"We considered, analysed the possibility of expanding Orenburg gas processing plant, or building a plant here in Kazakhstan, at Karachaganak," Akhmetov said. He said that in reaching a decision, the sides "will be governed primarily by effectiveness."
"This project should be competitive both for Russia and for Kazakhstan," he said.

Kazakh national oil and gas company KazMunaiGaz and Russian gas giant Gazprom are continuing to actively cooperate to transitgas from Turkmenistan through Kazakh territory.
"We have a clear program, which will make it possible to transport Turkmenistani gas through Kazakh territory to Russia. There is a general understanding of how to carry out this transit," he said.
