German chancellor proposes joint German/Norwegian cooperation

Nov 04, 2004 01:00 AM

German Federal Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder has proposed a joint German/Norwegian cooperation in the exploration for gas in the Barents Sea.
Schroeder has invited to a closer cooperation between German interests and Norwegian financier Kjell Inge Roekke's Aker Kvaerner.

During his visit to Norway this fall, the German Chancellor invited to a closer cooperation with regard to the extraction of natural gas from both the Norwegian and the Russian sector in the Barents Sea.
Kjell Inge Roekke and Schroeder have also have several meetings in secret to discuss industrial questions.

Aker Kvaerner is one of the world's leading suppliers of production equipment for oil and gas, particularly offshore, and the background for the German initiative is Germany's increasing demand for a secure supply of energy.
The German Chancellor invitation has so far not resulted in anything concrete.
