Ecuador and Colombia agree to build third interconnection

Oct 19, 2004 02:00 AM

Ecuador and Colombia have agreed to build a third power interconnection to start operations by end-2005, which will add 220 MW to Ecuador's grid, Ecuadorian President Lucio Gutierrez was quoted as saying.
Gutierrez made the announcement following a meeting with Colombia's President Alvaro Uribe.

The project is part of a bi-national cooperation plan to develop the border area between the two countries.
"This is very important news because in [the southern hemisphere summer months] we find ourselves in a severe drought," Gutierrez said.

Colombia has surplus capacity, making Ecuador a welcome outlet for sales.
In addition, Gutierrez and Uribe agreed to advance with long-term contracts between generators and consumers from 1Q05 "so that the private sectors negotiate with each other," Gutierrez said.
