Expert encourages East Java about its natural resources

Nov 07, 2004 01:00 AM

Indonesia's East Java province is estimated to have a 250 mm barrel oil reserve and 4 tcf natural gas reserve, an expert said.
General chairman of the Indonesian Geologists Association (IAGI), Andang Bachtiar, said that the province is the country's fourth biggest oil and natural gas producer, after Sumatra island, Kalimantan island and West Java province.

He noted that the oil and gas community in Sumatra plays an important role in deciding on oil and gas exploration in the island. He said that the lack of an oil and gas community in East Java is due to the fact that many oil exploration companies are based in Jakarta even if they conduct explorations in the province.
"Without such a community, the local people would not be able to decide on how to manage their natural resources," he said.

He expressed hope that academicians would be able to encourage the local people to be aware of their natural resources and actively take part in making decisions and managing the province's oil andgas reserves.
