BP Amoco launches ‘crystal clear' gasoline

Jan 13, 2005 01:00 AM

BP Amoco launched a new version of its Ultimate premium-grade gasoline in the South Florida market.
Amoco Ultimate "crystal clear" gasoline, now available at about 200 BP Amoco retail outlets in Broward, Miami-Dade, Palm Beach and three neighbouring counties, has a lower sulphur content than other conventional gasoline, improves fuel efficiency and provides better performance, company officials said at the Homestead-Miami Speedway.

BP Amoco makes the gas at its Texas City, Texas, refinery and obtains a cleaner, less polluting fuel by adding an extra step in the refining process to remove impurities called poly nuclear aromatics, said Mark W. Ensinger, a chemist who is manager of the company's global fuels technology department. The fuel is shipped from Texas to Port Everglades by sea for distribution to BP Amoco stations in its South Florida market.
"It's more expensive to take out the impurities," Ensinger said, but the new formulation offers lower emissions, better fuel economy and enhanced performance.

Even though BP Amoco spends more money to refine this new premium formula, company officials said it would be priced competitively with other premium grades. The new premium grade sold in South Florida will have less than 30 ppm of sulphur, Ensinger said. Other types of gasoline sold in the local market have higher sulphur levels, he added.
BP Amoco and other oil companies are producing gasoline with lower sulphur content as the federal government phases in a multiyear program to reduce sulphur levels.

BP Amoco, which has about 15,000 outlets in the United States, plans to expand sales of the new formulation to other markets after evaluating the response of South Florida consumers.
The gasoline actually began appearing at tri-county stations so that premium storage tanks containing the older version of Ultimate could be completely replaced with new product.
