Venezuela seeks cooperation with Russia in oil and gas sector

Dec 13, 2004 01:00 AM

Large-scale cooperation in the oil and gas sector is possible between Russia and Venezuela, the chairman of the board of directors of the Russian gas giant Gazprom, Alexei Miller, said.
Miller visited Caracas at the head of a Gazprom delegation to study possible directions for cooperation in that sector. He told that talks with the leadership of the Energy Ministry, the state company Petroleos de Venezuela as well as negotiations with Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez had convinced him that Venezuela was sincerely interested in establishing ties with Russian oil and gas companies.

Miller said that at talks with the Venezuelan leader, they had discussed long-term cooperation between the two countries. Venezuela has become the first Latin American country with which Gazprom is expected to launch projects for the prospecting and production of gas.
It was for the first time in the history of relations between Russia and Venezuela that such heavyweight delegations from oil and gas companies have visited Venezuela.
