May 12, 2005 02:00 AM

El Salvador will set up a bio-diesel plant in San Miguel Department, the east of the country, as an alternative to cope with the high costs of petroleum and its by-products, reports from San Salvador said.
The plant will be set up within three months at an initial cost of $ 60,000, El Salvador's Economy Ministry was quoted as saying.

Tests have been made in El Salvador to obtain fuel from the seeds of what is known as higuerillo.
The Central American country paid $ 669 mm for its petroleum imports last year.
