Mozambique opens oil and gas exploration opportunities

Mozambique is angling for major petroleum companies to engage in oil and gas exploration, with a top official saying that results could be expected within six months.
Speaking at an Africa oil and gas conference in the Mozambican capital, the head of the national petroleum regulator said at least 24 blocks in the main gas fields were available for exploration, while in the north, there was good possibility of finding oil.

"We believe that prospective opportunities are there, both on the coastal plain and on the continental shelf... where we believe the offshore gas field is extensive," said Arsenio Mabote, chairman of Mozambique's National Institute for Petroleum (INP).
"What we really want is exploration. We believe that within six months (of investment), we will be able to deliver," Mabote told some 400 delegates from 40 different countries attending the four-day conference.

Mozambique, a poor southern African country of more than 17 mm people, is slowly recovering from a devastating 16-year civil war which raged until 1992. Five years ago, floods swamped large swathes of the flat country on the Indian Ocean.
At the start of the oil and gas showcase, billed by organisers as Africa's premier event in the sector, the host country said it hoped it would kick start further projects.

Mozambique has two main areas where oil and gas could be exploited, Mabote said. The first is the Mozambique basin where the Pande and Temane gas fields are located, while oil is expected to be found in the northern Rovuma basin, the oil and gas regulator chief said.
Mozambique and South Africa last year opened a 865-kilometre pipeline from Pande and Temane at a total cost of some R 14 bn together with South African petroleum giant Sasol.
