Russian gas supplies resume to Dagestan and Azerbaijan

Sep 26, 2005 02:00 AM

Gas supplies have resumed to the northern districts of Dagestan and Azerbaijan via the Mozdok-Qazimammad main gas pipeline, the director of the centre for work with government agencies and public relations of the Kaspiygazprom [Caspian gas industry] company, Ullubiy Erbolatov, has reported.
"Gas supplies to Khasavyurtovskiy, Kizilyurtovskiy, Novolakskiy and Babayurtovskiy Districts, as well as to the towns of Khasavyurt and Kizilyurt were fully restored by 1600 Moscow time [1400 gmt]. The pressure in the pipeline is increasing, and Russian gas will reach Azerbaijani consumers in less than 30 minutes. Despite some media reports, the southern districts of Dagestan were not affected by the gas shortage due to the incident on the pipeline," Ullubiy Erbolatov said.

There was a blast on the 692nd km of the Mozdok-Qazimammad main gas pipeline on 23 September, Kaspiygazprom reported. The blast destroyed a 6-metre-long section of the pipeline with the diameter of 1,200 mm under the River Aktash 2 km away from the village of Pokrovskoye in Dagestan's Khasavyurtovskiy District.
No official reports have been issued on the cause of the incident, although it is known that law-enforcement agencies found and seized parts of an explosive device at the scene. Kaspiygazprom experts, based on their observations and analysis, believe that there was "outside interference".
