Greece and Turkey start gas pipeline project

Sep 19, 2005 02:00 AM

The prime ministers of Greece and Turkey have inaugurated a joint gas pipeline project linking the two countries.
Greece's Costas Karamanlis and Turkey's Recep Tayyip Erdogan attended the ceremony on a bridge across the river that separates the two countries.

Both leaders underlined what they called the historic and strategic nature of the project. The pipeline will carry gas from Azerbaijan and other Caspian and Caucasus producers to markets in Europe.
The 300 km pipeline is expected to be operational in 2006, and will later be extended to Italy. It will carry more than 11 bn cm of gas per year once connections are made at other planned pipelines.
