European Parliament supportive of Iran-India pipeline
The European Parliament (EP) has expressed support for a gas pipeline between Iran and India through Pakistan, saying
the project will encourage regional stability.
The EP adopted a lengthy 91-point resolution on EU-India relations during its plenary session in Strasbourg following
the sixth EU-India summit in New Delhi on September 7. The EP said it takes "note of the rapprochement between Iran,
Pakistan and India, as a result of which consideration is being given to the building of a gas pipeline from Iran to
India passing through Pakistani territory."
The EP considers that "support should be given to projects of this kind, which are essentially peaceful in nature,
benefit the peoples of the region and create a network of mutual interests deterring the prospect of conflict between
them, and encourage regional stability."
The EP also welcomed the signs of progress in Indo-Pakistani bilateral talks on Kashmir.
The House called on the EU to "progress quickly" with the consolidation of the strategic partnership between the EU
and India.
The European bloc and India signed the strategic partnership during the fifth EU-India summit in The Netherlands last
year in November.
