India supports electrification expansion in Mozambique

Jun 01, 2006 02:00 AM

The Indian government has granted $ 20 mm earmarked for the expansion of the electricity grid in the southern Mozambican province of Gaza.
The Executive Secretary of the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD), Firmino Mucavele, said that the money is to be channelled through this organization.

Speaking during the World Economic Forum for Africa in Cape Town, Mucavele added that this grant is the result of negotiations by NEPAD to raise funds for a variety of projects in African countries. He explained that NEPAD's task is to analyse the projects submitted by different countries and work to raise the necessary funds, if they are found to be feasible and important for the development of the country in question.
"This is what happened with the project of expanding the electricity grid in Gaza", he explained.

He recalled that this project may also benefit the heavy sands processing plant that will bee installed in the Gaza district of Chibuto.
Chibuto contains the largest known deposit of titanium-bearing sands in the world. But exploiting this resource depends on the availability of large amounts of electricity.
