Turkmenistan to meet Iran's gas shortage

Aug 06, 2006 02:00 AM

Oil Minister Seyyed Kazem Vaziri Hamaneh said that some plans have been considered to meet the shortage of gas in winter.
Speaking in a gathering of directors of oil and gas sectors in this north-eastern province, Hamaneh estimated that 100 mm cm of gas per day will be needed to meet the needs of people during winter. He said 65 mm cm of this amount will be supplied by Parsian and South Pars refineries while the other 45 mm cm is expected to be procured by Turkmenistan.

According to him, a memorandum of understanding has been signed with Turkmenistan, under which that country has been obligated to provide Iran with required gas for the following two years. Some 20 mm cm of Iran's gas shortage will be met as the result of this contract.
"The rest of gas shortage will be provided by imports," he said.
