Pakistan plans water, power and gas to all villages in Sindh region

President General Pervez Musharraf has said that all the villages in Sindh will get potable water and power by the end of 2007, while immediate steps will be taken for provision of gas to the villages as well within the same period. He was presiding over a high-level meeting held at the chief minister house to review the pace of work on several ongoing development projects in the province.
Governor Sindh, Dr Ishrat-ul-Ebad, Chief Minister, Dr Arbab Ghulam Rahim, Federal Minister for Water and Power, Liaquat Jatoi, Federal Minister for Kashmir and Northern Areas, Makhdoom Faisal Saleh Hayat, provincial ministers, MPAs, and officials of Wapda, Karachi Electric Supply Corporation (KESC), and Sui Southern Gas Company Limited (SSGC) attended the meeting.

The president directed the Sindh government and the Wapda authorities to take all possible measures in order to ensure the provision of power to all the villages in the province by the end of next year.
Expressing his dissatisfaction over thecontesting figures presented by the Sindh government and the WAPDA authorities as regards availability of electricity in the villages in the province, Musharraf directed the two sides to coordinate with each other and present a factual report on the issue.

He directed the officials of the SSGC officials to work for provision of gas to the people at least at district and sub-division level in the province. If gas was not directly provided to any area due to difficulties in installation of gas pipelines, then the availability of LPG gas be ensured there, he maintained.
"It is essential that all the people equally enjoy the fruit of the economic progress in the country", he added.

The president observed that due to unprecedented economic activity in the country, the energy demand had increased, and immediate steps should be taken to cope with the increasing demand. About the perpetual load-shedding and power breakdowns in Karachi, he said the steps being taken by the KESC regarding power generation would help ease the problem.
Musharraf said that Wapda had already been providing 250 MW more electricity to the KESC than the allocated quantity. He said that at least one water filtration plant would be installed at district and sub-division level by the end of 2007.
"Work on this project is underway at a fast pace, and will soon be completed…", he added.

The president directed the authorities concerned to give full weight to the suggestions from the elected representatives belonging to their respective areas where development projects were being carried out.
Musharraf asked the parliamentarians belonging to the ruling coalition to maintain a close contact with the people, and play their due role vis-à-vis timely completion of development projects in their respective constituencies. He directed the Sindh government to exploit all its resources for completion of development projects on time.
