Uganda to develop petroleum resources without external assistance

Nov 18, 2006 01:00 AM

Uganda is going to develop the vast petroleum resources being discovered in Bunyoro without external assistance, President Yoweri Museveni has said.
Museveni who was addressing the closing session of the European Development days in Heysel, Brussels, blamed the current power shortage in Uganda on misadvise from development partners.

"One of the biggest challenges African freedom fighters have faced in the struggle to identify and deal with these bottlenecks has been external meddling in decision-making, even after independence. Of course we are slowly defeating this but it has already cost us a lot.”
"Can you imagine a country like Uganda having a power shortage when we are at the source of River Nile? My plans to build dams on the Nile were interfered with by external forces who said Uganda was in danger of having too much electricity. I had to back down," he said.

Museveni spoke for 20 minutes -- double the time he was allocated.
After Museveni's speech, Louis Michel, the European Commissioner for Development and Humanitarian Aid said, "You spoke double the time but we didn't feel it." The audience of over 1, 000 clapped on and on as Museveni left the podium.
"The only action the West, China, Russia and everyone else can take is to keep their markets open. If you cannot help, do not obstruct development," he said.
