Ukraine and Poland affirm joint pipeline upgrade projects

Nov 19, 2006 01:00 AM

Ukraine is interested in joint projects with Poland to upgrade the gas pipelines linking the two countries, Ukrainian Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych said at the opening of a session of the two countries' economic cooperation commission in Kyiv.
"Ukraine attaches great importance to energy security and the creation of a unified Europe-wide format of cooperation in the energy sector. It should help guarantee deliveries of energy resources and establish a centralized market in the entire European space," he said.

Ukraine attaches great importance to projects aimed at expanding chains of petrol stations and selling pressurized and liquefied gas, he said. Both Ukraine and Poland view their transit systems as an integral component of the common European energy market, Yanukovych said.
Cooperation in repairs and construction projects on the gas pipeline network in northern Poland and gas pipelines linking the two nations' systems, as well as measures to boost the capacity of operating gas pipelines and build more pipelines to link the gas transportation systems of Poland, Ukraine and Europe, as a whole, hold great promise, the prime minister said.

Projects to modernize and develop the system of gas storage facilities in Poland and Ukraine are promising as well, he said.
The Ukrainian authorities are also interested in establishing a Ukrainian-Polish company that will build gas supply systems in the regions and sell gas to end-consumers in Poland, Ukraine and third countries, Yanukovych said.
