Sweden concerned about Baltic pipeline project

Nov 15, 2006 01:00 AM

The Swedish government is concerned that a planned Russian pipeline under the Baltic could have serious consequences for Swedish security.
The Nord Stream pipeline is to deliver natural gas from Russia to Germany. It will pass through the Swedish economic zone in the Baltic.

A maintenance platform is to be built just 40 km off the island of Gotland, the largest island in the Baltic Sea.
A Swedish intelligence officer told that the pipeline can be used to place a chain of sonar microphones, which would allow Russia to follow the movements of shipping, providing it with an early warning defense system in the Baltic.
