Iran to sell gas to Azerbaijan at international price

The National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC) marketing and sales manager said the price of gas exported to Republic of Azerbaijan was fixed according to international rate.
Fattah Bayat-Bayatani told Iran and Azerbaijan had yet to hold talks and discuss the main points on gas exports. He added that Iranian officials would pay a visit to Baku if the Azerbaijani party voiced its readiness for negotiations.

“Iran has agreed to supply 1.8 bn cm of gas a year, but the price has not been negotiated yet,” Azerbaijan’s First Deputy Prime Minister Yagub Eyyubov said last December.
“The Iranian side has not specified the price yet. If it turns out realistic, we will sign a relevant agreement,” Eyyubov said. He added that $ 110 per 1,000 cm was a suitable price for Azerbaijan.

Russian gas monopoly Gazprom’s announcement that it will charge Azerbaijan $ 235 per 1,000 cm instead of the previous $ 110 next year has angered Azerbaijani officials and prompted the country to seek alternative sources of gas. Currently, Azerbaijan uses 10 bn to 12 bn cm per year -- about half of which it produces itself and the other half it imports from Russia, but the output from the biggest offshore gasfield Shah Deniz, which started on December 15, will help the country meet its domestic demand.
The NIGC marketing manager said Eyyubov and Iran’s Minister of Petroleum Seyed Kazem Vaziri-Hamaneh reached an agreement in Tehran on September 27, 2006 according to which that Iran would export 1.8 bn cm of gas to Azerbaijan within maximum four years.
