Nigeria to tackle energy crisis

Nov 01, 2007 01:00 AM

President Umaru Yar'Adua, said he would not yield in his efforts to find a lasting solution to the energy crisis in Nigeria. Yar'Adua said he would achieve this by seeking the assistance of experts in the power sector anywhere in the world.
He stated this in his address at the foundation laying ceremony of the Aba Independent Power Project (IPP), owned by Geometric Power Limited, which he described as a reference point in the on-going power generation efforts in Nigeria.

Represented by the Minister of State for Energy and Gas, Yar'Adua said his absence at the ceremony was because he was abroad in his "efforts to reach out to international experts in the power sector for possible assistance and collaboration for the development of Nigeria's energy sector”.
Paying glowing tributes to Professor Barth Nnaji for his initiative and faith in his fatherland, which motivated his establishment of the Aba IPP, Yar'Adua called on other investors both local and foreign, to borrow a leaf from Nnaji byinvesting in Nigeria's power sector brimming with opportunities provided by the reforms of the sector. He urged Nigerians in the Diaspora to think home and like Nnaji, bring their expertise and money to help Nigeria out of the energy doldrums.

He said: "it is gratifying to know that while we are soliciting for assistance of foreign experts and investors, our own men and women in the Diaspora, as exemplified by Nnaji are responding positively to our call to be part of Nigeria's development. The $ 250 mm project is the first major investment by a Nigerian in Diaspora."
Governor Theodore Orji of Abia State commended Yar'Adua for declaring a state of emergency in the power sector, noting that "drastic situations call for drastic measures and no measure applied to our power sector will be deemed drastic."

Nnaji, who is the Chairman/CEO of Geometric Power, said the power plant when in full operation, would generate 140 MW of electricity well above the estimated energy needs of Aba, which is put at 110 MW.
