China to expand oil and gas equipment supplies to Turkmenistan

Talks between President of Turkmenistan Kurbanguly Berdymukhamedov and the Premier of the State Council of the People's Republic of China Wen Jiabao, who had come on an official visit to the Turkmen capital, were held in Ashgabat on 4 November.
The Premier of the PRC State Council left his residence to head for the centre of the city. The official ceremony of greeting the honorary Chinese guest was held on the main city square in front of the Presidential Palace. Cordially thanking Kurbanguly Berdymukhamedov for the invitation to visit Ashgabat and the heartfelt welcome Mr Wen Jiabao conveyed the warm greetings and best wishes of President of the People's Republic of China Hu Jintao to the Turkmen leader. The honorary guest emphasized that he was very glad to visit Ashgabat and to have a personal meeting with the leader of the Turkmen state.

Focusing on the particular issues of economic co-operation Kurbanguly Berdymukhamedov put emphasis on the constructive approach to interaction in the fuel and energy sector, the reciprocal interest in expanding cooperation in that field. Touching upon economic cooperation in general, the state leader said that 17 companies with participation of Chinese capital have been registered and are currently operating in Turkmenistan, 46 investment projects worth $ 920.5 mm and approximately CNY 1.5 bn are being implemented.
Mr President said that the considerable growth of trade turnover between Turkmenistan and China vividly testifies to effectiveness of the concerted efforts. Within nine months of 2007, the trade turnover exceeded $ 303 mm, compared to just $ 24.7 mm in 2000.

Kurbanguly Berdymukhamedov noted that the figure would increase drastically as the Turkmenistan-China gas pipeline project was implemented. Up to 30 bn cm of Turkmen natural gas are expected to be annually transmitted to PRC through this transport pipeline over the period of 30 years.
Kurbanguly Berdymukhamedov said that the joint work to implement the General Agreement on gas pipeline construction and to export "blue fuel" to the People's Republic of China was actively carried on. In particular, relevant project coordination agencies were established.

The Chinese partners received the license for exploration and development of the deposits on the right bank of the Amudarya River. Additionally, the Turkmen partners fulfilled their commitments to conduct the feasibility study on construction of Malay-Bagtyyralyk gas pipeline.
Kurbanguly Berdymukhamedov touched upon the fruitful operation of large Chinese oil and gas companies in Turkmenistan that supply oilfield equipment to the country, drill wells, perform well workovers and increase production rate. On November 5, the Premier of the State Council of the People's Republic of China Wen Jiabao left Ashgabat.
