Geo-political events block Balkans’ energy projects

Oct 28, 2007 02:00 AM

The geo-political developments in the Balkans sabotaged two energy projects in Greece -- Turkey-Greece gas pipeline and Burgas-Alexandroupolis oil pipeline in Northern Greece, having in mind that by the beginning of 2007 one of them had to be opened and the other one -- to be under construction.
The problem with the gas pipeline is not due to Greece, but to the “Gordian knot” Turkey-US-EU, which has recently tied even tighter when Washington recognized the Armenian genocide and Ankara invaded Northern Iraq. That’s why the opening of the pipeline has been put off three times so far.

Russia is also playing a role refusing to provide with oil the 49 % of the pipeline that belong to Bulgaria and Greece.
The US on the other hand exerts pressure on the two countries not to accept Moscow’s request to sell their shares in the pipeline to LUKoil and KazMunaiGaz. It is rumoured that among the hurdles for Burgas-Alexandroupolis are also ecological concerns both in Bulgaria and Greece in the region of the Maritsa river.
