Promise of new oil reserves in Iran
The findings of a new study conducted by an Iranian geologist reveal the presence of profuse oil and gas reserves in
northern Iran.
In his research, Advisor to the managing director of NIOC Oil Exploration Operations Co., Dr Mohammad Ghavidel-syooki
has proven that contrary to former beliefs, the Gorgan schists belong to Ordovician and not the infra-Cambrian age.
"When the ancient layers of deposits in a region are assumed to be metamorphic and have outcrops, no one bothers to
explore for oil, and exploration projects are suspended," said the senior NIOC official.
"I have proven that the oldest deposits, taken as belonging to infra-Cambrian age, actually date back to the
Palaeozoic era," he said.
The new findings prove the presence of profuse oil and gas reserves in northern, north-eastern and north-western
Iran.
"This research prepares the grounds for gas and oil exploration in Gorgan, Makou, Tabriz and other parts of
Azerbaijan Province for the first time," Ghavidel-syooki concluded.
