The Northern region will soon commence the exploration and exploitation of oil and gas through the Chad Basin and Benue trough, Kaduna state governor has said.
Architect Mohammed Namadi Sambo said this when he received members of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN), Kaduna chapter. He said the government of the region is determined to improve the economic of profile of the region, and part of their programmes towards that was to explore oil and gas deposit.

He said exploration and exploitation of oil in the region would not only improve the economic situation of the north but would also enable the region contribute positively to the development of the country.
"The Northern states government are committed to ensure that oil is explored in the Chad Basin and Benue trough. We will also support and encourage the dredging of River Niger to enable big vessels access to the river. This will bring development to the north and country in general."

ThePENGASSAN Northern Zonal Chairman, Comrade Mohammed Saidu, urged the governor to assist them to appeal to the federal government to prevail on the Bureau of Public Enterprise (BPE) to reverse its decision of privatizing the Petroleum Product and Marketing Company (PPMC) and the Nigeria Gas Company (NGC).
"It is unfortunate that it is at this time of economic recession in the world that the BPE is planning to privatize PPMC. This is the only government's interest in oil business", he said.

He said though oil exploitation is an expensive venture but has high economic and social returns in the long run and therefore urged the governor to encourage northern elites to get involved.
"We urged the northern governors to support the New Nigeria Development Company (NNDC) in its effort towards the full exploitation and exploration of oil and Gas in the Chad Basin and the Benue trough," he said.
