Petrobras wants to be a generator of electric energy

Sep 27, 2008 02:00 AM

Petrobras's director for Gas & Energy, Maria das Gracas Foster, announced on September 17, 2008 during the Rio Oil & Gas, that the company is interested in becoming an electric energy generator.
"The decision will be totally economic in nature, as defined by the regulatory framework for the electric energy sector," said the director. During her presentation, Gracas Foster spoke about the Bolivia gas issue, stating that supply to Brazil has already been fully normalized.
"Bolivia has been an exceptional gas vendor."

The director also highlighted the perspectives of increasing production and expanding the gas area infrastructure. The integrated work carried out with the Exploration & Production area, according to Gracas Foster, is fundamental to reach the objective of meeting, by 2012, the domestic and foreign market demand by supplying 134 mm cmpd, with production coming from the Tupi and Jupiter fields.
"This is not fiction, nor is the construction of 10,000 km of gas pipelines by 2010." Gas is expected to be put in the network in November, said the Foster.

According to Gracas Foster, Petrobras intends, for economic reasons, to increase gas supply to the market by 2012.
"This product is already being placed in the market with the support of the Comgas distributor," she said.

Petrobras's executive highlighted that beginning in 2010, the demand for natural gas to generate electric energy will gradually increase, until production reaches 50 mm cmpd.
"Petrobras is proposing to become an electric energy generator. We are committed to investing in the safety the Country is in search of in order to be able to indiscriminately meet the growth needs of the Brazilian economy," she completed.
