Petrobras discovers more gas in Santos Basin

Oct 30, 2008 01:00 AM

Brazil's Petrobras reported an additional discovery of natural gas in its BS-500 block in the Santos Basin offshore Brazil, the country's federal hydrocarbons regulator ANP said.
The discovery is in an area where the company already has a $ 2.5 bn plan to tap gas fields starting in 2010.

Petrobras reported the new gas discovery to ANP. The discovery was at an exploratory well drilled to a depth of 4,925 meters in waters 1,092 meters deep, according to ANP.
Under Brazilian law, Petrobras must report all new hydrocarbons discoveries to ANP, regardless of whether they are considered suitable prospects for commercial development.

After several earlier discoveries in the area, Petrobras already plans to tap into at least two fields, known as Urugua and Tambau, in the BS-500 block.
A platform to be installed at Urugua in 2010 will have capacity to produce 10 mm cmpd of gas, the company has said.
