Oct 29, 2008 01:00 AM

The Federal government said 418 oil spill incidents were reported to the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) in the first six months of 2this year.
Minister of Environment, Housing and Urban Development, Halima Tayo Alao said this at the National workshop on Environmental Sensitivity Index (ESI) mapping for Nigeria which held in Abuja.

"This record portends great danger to the nation; particularly the environment as well as the social and economic well being of the people, thus the need for the ESI initiative."
She said the frequency of oil spills in the country has generated great displeasure for the government and the ESI initiative would be the most appropriate exercise to provide baseline information on strategies to adopt for the protection of the Nigerian coastline and inland areas during oil spill incidents.
