Rompetrol discharges first oil tanker at new Black Sea terminal

Mar 03, 2009 01:00 AM

A first oil tanker containing 60,000 tons of crude was discharged via the new terminal in the Black Sea port of Constanta (south-eastern Romania), that was completed at the end of last year, Rompetrol Group said.
"This is the first step that confirms both the functioning of the new investment at the best parameters and the Group's plan to become a key player in the oil supply to the Central and Western Europe refineries. The transfer of oil to the refinery's reservoirs went on smoothly", said Tudorel Dumitrascu, managing director of the project developed by Midia Marine Terminal, a member of Rompetrol Group, that carried out the discharge.

The terminal can transfer 24 mm tons of crude per annum and it will allow cuts of at least $ 4-$ 5 a ton of the oil supply costs, as a result of the shortened distance by 33 km compared to the route via Constanta port and of no more relevant technological losses. The terminal can receive up-to-165,000 dwt tankers; it is located 8.8 km off the Black Sea coast, the construction works were completed at the end of last year, with the investment totalling more than $ 100 mm (EUR 76 mm).
The technical project required various geo-technical and geo-physical surveys of the area the pipeline is located in as well as all the available environmental data regarding the winds, waves, water temperature and earthquakes.

Rompetrol Rafinare, the Group's refining arm, assigned more than $ 40 mm (EUR 30.4 mm) to upgrade its oil storage facilities in line with the international standards. Rompetrol Group has long-term plans to expand the storage facilities of Petromidia refinery from the current 500,000 tons to 1.5 mm tons of crude.
At end-2008, Rompetrol Rafinare finalised works meant to increase the transit capacity of oil products via Navodari Midia port by 350 % on an investment worth $ 29 mm (EUR 22 mm). The company last year recorded an historic high of processed oil at 4.2 mm tons up from 3.7 mm tons in 2007 and 1.15 mm tons in 2000, before the refinery was taken over by Rompetrol Group, the release said.
