Azerbaijan plans major oil and gas upgrades
Reconstruction and upgrades to the oil and gas infrastructure in Azerbaijan top the list of priorities in a state
The latest State Program on Socioeconomic Development of Regions document prioritizes improvements to the energy industry as Azerbaijan positions itself as a major player in the oil and gas industry.
Azerbaijan emerged as a top supplier nation due to lucrative resources in the Caspian region. The offshore Shah Deniz
gas field, discovered in 1999, is one of the largest finds in recent decades. Meanwhile, the Azeri-Chirag-Guneshli
complex in the Caspian Sea contributes to the estimated 7 bn barrels of Azeri crude reserves.
The state program plans to boost scientific research and designs to increase the potential for alternative- and renewable-energy resources under the auspices of the Ministry of Industry and Energy.
Meanwhile, upgrades to energy transmission lines and power stations, as well as increased resource exploration, are
included in plans over thenext few years.
Azerbaijan hosts the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline, the second-longest in the world, and sits as a potential starting point for the Nabucco gas pipeline to Europe.
