$ 1.1 bn slated for Peruvian electricity projects this year

Peru's National Mining, Petroleum and Energy Society (SNMPE) said that power generation, transmission and distribution companies operating across the country will invest this year more than $ 1.1 bn to expand and improve their capacity.
This investment will increase the current power generation capacity by more than 1,350 MW and raise the reserve capacity of the National Interconnected System (SEIN) to 35 %. Therefore, Peru's power generation sector will attract nearly $ 4 bn worth of investments in the 2004-2009 period, allowing to increase the existing capacity by more than 2,364 MW.

So far this year, the thermal power plants of Oquendo (30 MW), Kallpa (190 MW) and Chilca I (190 MW) have been put into operation.
SNMPE said that new power plants that will come into operation in the in Octobers include TG8 unit of Edegel's Santa Rosa thermal plant (190 MW) and Mollendo and Calana natural gas units (99 MW each).
