Russia approves energy strategy until 2030

Nov 27, 2009 01:00 AM

The Russian government approved an energy strategy until 2030, which foresees an increase in energy output and a declining reliance on natural resources.
Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has ordered the Energy Ministry, the Economic Development Ministry, the Natural Resources Ministry and state-run nuclear power corporation Rosatom to secure the fulfilment of the new strategy and make annual reports to the government.

The new energy strategy includes plans to raise annual oil production to 530-535 mm tons, gas production to 885-940 bn cm and electricity output to 1.8-2.2 tn kW/hr by 2030.
Crude and petroleum product exports are expected to rise to 329 mm tons and gas exports to 349-368 bn cm by the same year.

The Russian economy, heavily depending on the exportation of energy and raw materials, has been hit hard by the global financial crisis.
Russian leaders have repeatedly emphasized the need to modernize the economy.
