Iran and Nigeria discuss energy cooperation

Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki and his Nigerian counterpart Henry Odein Ajumogobia exchanged views and discussed two-way and international developments.
Mottaki travelled to Nigeria to attend D8 ministerial summit. Addressing his Nigerian counterpart, Mottaki referred to various cooperation potentials between the member states of D8 adding that due to huge population, geopolitical status, numerous capacities, and the role in global energy security D8 Summit could be regarded as an important international event.

Energy, industry, agriculture, foodstuffs, tourism and education were among major fields in which the D8 member states could further expand cooperation, Mottaki added. He also called for expansion of bilateral ties between Iran and Nigeria especially in oil and gas sectors.
Referring to Iranian private sector's active role in Nigeria's oil and gas sector, he announced readiness for further cooperation.

Ajumogobia welcomed expansion of ties with Iran as a developing countrywith remarkable achievements in various fields. He also called for further cooperation in oil, gas, trade, industry, agriculture, mining and education.
The D8 consists of Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Turkey. The combined population of the eight countries is about 60 % of the Muslim people, or close to 13 % of the world's population.

The objectives of D8 are to improve developing countries' positions in the world economy, diversify and create new opportunities in trade relations, enhance participation in decision-making at the international level, and provide better standards of living.
