Algeria opened six gas-fuelled power stations in 2009

Algeria brought online six gas-fuelled power stations generating 2,000 MW of electricity in 2009, the head of the state-owned utility company Sonelgaz said.
The power stations were built at a cost of $ 6 bn as part of a 2006 emergency plan to satisfy rising electricity demand in the North African country, Noureddine Boutarfa told.

"Today, Algeria has sufficient means of production until 2012," when new power stations will start operating, Boutarfa said.
Sonelgaz's target is to satisfy domestic demand but during hours when Algeria's electricity demand is low, "there are export opportunities" notably to Morocco, Boutarfa said.
