Argentina expands renewables in fuel mix

Jul 06, 2010 02:00 AM

The percentage of renewables in Argentina's diesel fuel has been raised to 7 %, the government said.
Biofuels production opens "a new horizon in the diversification of the energy mix," Planning Minister Julio de Vido said.

Argentina approved a law in 2006 that requires traditional fuels to be mixed with renewables as of 2010.
The previous standard required mixing diesel with at least 5 % biodiesel, but the minimum has now been raised by 2 %.

The new regulations will allow Argentina, a big agricultural producer, to reduce its diesel imports, De Vido said.
The fuel mix will likely rise to 10 % at the end of this year, the minister said.
