ENI announces further natural gas discovery in Mozambique

The Italian energy company ENI has announced the discovery of further enormous reserves of natural gas in the Rovuma Basin, off the coast of the northern Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado. A release from ENI said that drilling at the 'Mamba North 1' well has encountered 'a mineral potential of 7.5 tcf of gas in place'.
At Mamba North 1, 45 km off the coast, the water is 1,690 meters deep, and ENI has drilled to a total depth of 5,330 meters.

According to the release "the discovery well encountered a total of 186 meters of gas pay in multiple high-quality Oligocene and Paleocene sands". During the production tests undertaken offshore by ENI, the well "produced high quality gas with flow rates, constrained by surface facilities, of about 1 mm cmpd and minor volumes of condensates", said the release.
"In a final production completion configuration, estimated gas production per well is expected to reach over 4 mm cmpd".

In October last year ENI announced two discoveries in one well, Mamba South 1, 23 km south of Mamba North 1, which amounted to total gas reserves of 22.5 tcf. Putting the two wells together, the known reserves in the Mamba complex now amount to 30 tcf.
ENI plans to drill another five wells nearby, which will give it a more complete picture of the potential of the area.

ENI is the operator of Rovuma Basin Offshore Area 4, with a 70 % participating interest. Its partners are the Portuguese company Galp Energia (10 %), the Korea Gas Corporation (KOGAS 10 %), and Mozambique's publicly owned National Hydrocarbon Company, ENH (also with 10 %).
These discoveries, like those of the US company Anadarko in Offshore Area 1, which is nearer the coast, make it feasible to build liquefied natural gas (LNG) complexes in Cabo Delgado which can supply gas for the domestic and export markets.
