Iranian President launches two key petrochemical projects
President of Iran Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has inaugurated two key energy projects in Assalouyeh-based Pars Special Economic Energy Zone (PSEEZ).
Forming a part of the Mehr Mandegar (Lasting Kindness) projects, the two projects are West Ethylene Pipeline project and Kavian Petrochemical Plant project, both in Southern Iran.
The President inaugurated the second phase of PSEEZ-based Kavian petrochemical complex and first phase of the West Ethylene Pipeline.
Commissioning of the second phase has raised the production capacity of Kavian Petrochemical Plant, one of the world’s biggest ethylene producing plant, to two million tons of ethylene annually.
The designing and most of the machinery at the Kavian plant is made domestically.
Ethylene produced at PSEEZ-based Kavian petrochemical complex would be transferred to other complexes in Western Iran including Kermanshah, Mahabad, Lorestan, Andimeshk, Kurdistan and Miyandoab through the West Ethylene Pipeline, while the surplus would be transferred to petrochemical plants in Southern Iran-based Mahshar Special Economic Zone.
The first phase of the West Ethylene Pipeline, the other project inaugurated by the President, stretches 1200 km and is considered to be the world’s longest ethylene pipeline.
The 8-24 inch pipeline would transfer around 1.5 million tons of ethylene with Kavian contributing 1 million tons and Morvarid petrochemical plant contributing the rest 0.5 million tons.
Located in the country’s Southern city of Assalouyeh – PSEEZ was set up in 1988 to exploit oil and gas resources of Persian Gulf-based South Pars gas field and to promote commercialization in areas of oil, gas and petrochemicals.
The world’s biggest natural gas condensate, South Pars is divided between Iran and Qatar. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), the field has around 50 billion barrels or 7.9 billion cubic meters of natural gas liquids and about 1,800 trillion cubic feet or 51 trillion cubic meters of in-situ natural gas.
