Total announces start-up of Norway's Ekofisk South oil field

French oil major Total has started oil production at the Ekofisk South project in the Norwegian North Sea about 2 months ahead of schedule on Oct. 25.

The output capacity at Ekofisk South is 70,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day. Total holds a 39.9 percent interest in the PL 018 licence where the Ekofisk field is located, about 300 kilometres off the Norwegian coast.

"Ekofisk came on stream in 1971 and is still one of the largest oil fields in Norway," Patrice de Vivies, Total's Senior Vice-President Exploration and Production for Northern Europe, said.

"The Ekofisk South project is an important building block to extend the lifespan of Ekofisk for some 40 further years."

Total is among a raft of operators pouring billions of dollars of investment into the icy, rough waters off the coast of Scotland and Norway, where long-declining production potential has been revived by better technology and higher oil prices.
