Iran's Research Institute of Petroleum Industry (RIPI) and State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR) inked an agreement to study their joint oil and gas reservoirs in the Caspian Sea as well as its environmental issues.

Deputy Head of the RIPI for technological and international affairs Amir Abbas Hosseini said the Caspian Sea's environmental issues and boosting extraction of oil and gas from its reservoirs are the major topics of the agreement which was signed on Saturday, Shana reported.

"The institute can offer the SOCAR its achievements in dredging polluted residues in the sea," he said.

Tehran has in recent years focused seriously on development of ties with neighboring countries, including Republic of Azerbaijan which enjoys various commonalties with Iran in religious, historical and cultural fields.
