Brazil confirms Round 13 to include 266 blocks

Brazil's national energy policy board has authorized the auction of 266 oil and gas concessions in October, local hydrocarbons regulator ANP said on Tuesday.

The tender will include 182 onshore and 84 offshore blocks covering 125,046km2.

Onshore areas are located in the Amazonas, Parnaíba, Recôncavo and Potiguar basins while offshore blocks lie within the Sergipe-Alagoas, Jacuípe, Espírito Santo, Campos, Camamu-Almada and Pelotas basins.

An additional 11 blocks will be offered from mature areas with marginal accumulations, ANP said. They form part of the Recôncavo, Tucano Sul, Paraná, Barreirinhas, Potiguar and Espírito Santo basins, covering 58.4 km2.

The October 7-8 bid round will be Brazil's first offering of oil and gas blocks since 2013.

Plans to hold the auction in the first half of the year were shelved amid concerns about the impact of falling crude prices and a corruption scandal engulfing state-run oil firm Petrobras.

Energy consultant Alessandra Simões told BNamericas the tender gave Brazil a chance to re-establish its reputation as an attractive market for oil companies.

"This will be important to help the country restore its global image, which was affected by the Car Wash scandal," said Simões, a partner at Rio de Janeiro-based consultancy Uphill. "Brazil has done its homework. Round 13 has some good opportunities that we think will attract companies both in Brazil and abroad."

ANP will publish bidding terms for the auction on Friday (June 12).
