Iranian contractor to build Iran-Oman gas project

An Iranian company will be constructing a pipeline for carrying Iranian gas to Oman, a sign of progress in a project that has been going forward at a slow pace.

“The construction of the gas export pipeline from Iran to Oman will be carried out by the Iranian Offshore Engineering and Construction Company (IOEC),” Rahim Tabrizi, an official at the company, said in a recent interview with Iran’s Tasnim News Agency.

Ali Reza Kameli, managing director of the National Iranian Gas Export Company (NIGEC) had also said earlier that the Iranian consultant for carrying out studies on the pipeline project from Mobarak Mountain to Port of Sohar has been appointed.

“The legal procedure for handing over the project is underway,” he said, according to the public relations department of NIGEC.

Kameli said that the project will have an offshore section and an onshore section.

“The offshore section of the project is from Rudan to Mobarak Mountain with a length of 200 kilometres, and the onshore part will be from Mobarak Mountain to Port of Sohar, which is 200 kilometres as well,” he added.

The official noted that the studies on both parts will be conducted simultaneously to ensure a smooth implementation of the project.

The agreement for the purchase of around $60 billion worth of natural gas from Iran for 25 years, which includes laying a $1 billion gas pipeline to Oman across the Gulf, was signed during the visit of Iranian President Hassan Rouhani to Muscat in March 2014.

The pipeline would connect the Iranian province of Hormuzgan to Sohar in Oman.
