Zanzibar get Power from S. Africa

Nov 23, 1996 01:00 AM

The power supply from Tanzania's mainland to Zanzibar is expected to be switched off early next year after 16 years services. From then on the isles will rely on a South Africa company, Electorgen Limited. The move is said to be aimed at making Zanzibar self reliant in electricity. The Principal Secretary to the Zanzibar Ministry for Water, Construction and Energy, Mohammed Salim, told that Electrogen will ultimately supply the isles with 110 MW through gas powered generators in three phases. The first phase will be of 35 MW to be followed with another 35 MW after a year and 40 MW later. Electrogen will also be responsible for power supply in Zanzibar's sister Island of Pemba. Zanzibar has a little more than 25,000 consumers, of whom about 20,000 are in the main Island of Unguja. At present, Zanzibar's requirements for power stand at a little more than 15 MW.
