Egypt and Morocco further Power co-operation

Dec 18, 1996 01:00 AM

Egyptian Prime Minister Kamal al-Ganzouri met with the Moroccan Minister of Energy and Mines Abdel Latif el-Karawi in a bid to boost co-operation on energy production between the two countries. The two men also discussed the distribution of energy in line with the resolutions adopted by the joint Egyptian-Moroccan Higher Committee. The talks took place a day after Egypt and Morocco signed a new technical co-operation protocol on boosting power links. Under the protocol, the two countries will design, establish and operate power stations and networks as well as support and develop new electricity fields, such as solar and wind power. Egyptian Minister of Electricity and Energy Maher Abaza on Dec. 17, discussed with the Moroccan official the Arab Maghreb power grid in preparation for the next power ministers conference for the Arab Maghreb countries, slated to be held in Tunisia in March. The first phase of the Arab Maghreb unified power grid project is due to be operational in 1998 and will be linked with the European power grid, with the first link being made through Morocco and Spain and the second will be through Tunisia and Italy.
