Nigeria to use gas resources for power generation
President Olusegun Obasanjo has said that Nigeria's abundant gas resources will be used to provide power for the
rapid development of the economy.
The President was speaking at the State House Abuja on August 15, during a meeting on natural gas pricing in the country.
"Nigeria's abundant gas reserves must be used to meet our national power needs and develop the economy. I must use
what I have to develop the country. I have gas and I will use it to create jobs, wealth, generate power, stop
desertification and move Nigeria forward", he said.
He directed the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation to form a joint team with the Oil Producers' Trade Section, OPTS, of the Lagos Chambers of Commerce and Industry "to achieve alignment on realizing the strategic domestic industry gas supply and pricing programme".
President Obasanjo said any plans for the supply of gas must take due consideration of small and medium scale as well
as domestic consumers.
Earlier, Engr. Funsho Kupolokun, Group Managing Director of the NNPC had presented proposals on the pricing of the country's natural gas to the President, while the OPTS had expressed a desire for more consultation.
