Shell signs power refurbishing deal with Nigeria
Shell's Nigeria unit has signed a deal with the Nigerian government for the refurbishment of several thermal power
plants located at Afam in the Niger Delta.
Shell is to invest $ 770 mm in the complex, which is expected to have a capacity of 936 MW, the company said.
Shell will rehabilitate and operate the Afam I-IV power plants and increase their combined capacity to 660 MW, under
the terms of the lease contracts awarded by Nigeria's power monopoly National Electric Power Authority.
Shell will also lease and operate the 276-MW Afam V plant, which was commissioned in 2002. Current power generation
from the five plants at Afam averages about 330 MW.
The project was put on hold last year following protests by NEPA workers, which prevented access to the Afam site for
engineering inspection work.
Two other oil majors, Agip and ExxonMobil, are also building power plants in Nigeria with expected capacities of 450
MW and 350 MW respectively.
