The Nigerian Gas Company (NGC) has signed a $ 70 mm refurbishment contract with the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) in a bid to upgrade NGC 's 12 stations. Under the contract tagged "Use Agreement", the SPDC is to update the 12 stations, which are in poor condition, and recoup the investment as it operates ten of them.

Commenting on the contract objective, project manager for the Associated Gas Gathering-West (AGG) Joe Obiahu, said "it is a quick-win for us in putting out routine gas flares". John Okwa, another project manager, said refurbishment at each of the stations will start with an inspection with the contractor, and then SPDC and NGC officials assess the scope of work and agree on remedial action.
"This is very crucial because most of the stations have been vandalized in the series of community strife, especially in the swamp area," he said.

All the instrumentation and control systems in the 12 stations are reportedly to be modernized and programmed to last at least 20 years. It is expected the first phase of the project will be completed before the end of the year, while two of the stations at Afiesere and Eriemu will become operational by the end of July.
