The Uganda Electricity Transmission Co. announced it has started construction of a 220,000-V power transmission line. The $ 58-mm power line starts at the Bujagali dam in Jinja and runs the power from the dam to the national grid.
The line is the first of its kind to be connected to the grid, said Eriasi Kiyemba, managing director of the Uganda Electricity Transmission Co.

Uganda has 12 substations with a total capacity of 132,000 V, and the new line will have a higher capacity than those stations combined, Kiyemba said. The line will pass through the Mabira Forest in the Mukono District.
The aim is to increase the transmission capacity and improve reliability of power and meet growing demand.

Funding for the project is coming from the African Development Bank and the Japan Bank for International Cooperation, and $ 17 mm in compensation was given to the 2,682 households impacted by the construction.
