Medgaz pipeline opening delayed
The commercial start up of the 210 km Medgaz pipeline, which will run between Beni Saf, off the Algerian coast and
the Spanish coast of Almeria, has been delayed.
A spokesman for the Medgaz consortium said the full commissioning of the 8 bn cm capacity gas pipeline is now
anticipated for June 2010, with tests on the pipeline scheduled to begin in March 2010.
The Medgaz pipeline is a strategic project for Algeria, Spain, and the rest of Europe, supplying natural gas directly
from Algeria, without requiring transit through third countries. The project is currently 90 % complete and crosses
the Mediterranean Sea at depths of more than 2 km.
The Medgaz consortium comprises of Enel, Endesa, GdF Suez and Iberdrola.
